Gurudwara Garna Sahib in Hoshiarpur

Hoshiarpur is one of the religious places in the state of Punjab and it is well known for numerous historical Gurudwaras found in its arena. Among these places, one of the most divine shrines of Hoshiarpur is Gurudwara Garna Sahib. It is situated in the vicinity of Dasuya at distance of one and half kilometer from Garna Sahib Railway station. The name of Gurudwara Garna Sahib is derived from the Garna tree, under which Guru Hargobind Sahib used to take rest.

History of Gurudwara Garna Sahib Hoshiarpur

Existence of Gurudwara Garna Sahib is hidden behind the very interesting story of Guru Hargobind Sahib, who was on the mission of preaching Sikhism in this region. Once he was passing through this forest, one dried garna bush stuck in his clothes and stopped him to move further. Guru Hargobind Sahib stopped and released himself from that bush and told his followers to root it in the ground. Guru Sahib blessed this bush with powers to release people from sorrows. Soon this bush became huge tree and when Guru Hargobind Sahib visited same place again, he sat in the shade of this tree. A musician from the Bodal village, which was in the vicinity, came here and sang Hymns for him. The Guruji got much pleased with these satisfying moments.



After some time, the owner of land ordered to cut down the trees of this region. In this series, his servants also put down this garna tree. But, on the very next day, tree was once again standing tall. This happened thrice but they failed to cut down the garna tree. At last, spirituality voice came to land owner that this tree is immortal hence cannot be cut. After that, the person left the entire place to flourish aura of this garna tree. Today, the garna tree is still present and people across the state come to Guru Garna Sahib to fulfill their wishes and desires.

Significance of Guru Garna Sahib Hoshiarpur

Guru Garna Sahib is one of the holiest places of Hoshiarpur and people across the state of Punjab come here to pay their devotion. The building of Gurudwara was started by the leader of Ramgarhia Missi, Sardar Jodh Singh. After his death in 1816, Bhai Ishar Singh took initiative to complete the work of Gurudwara.



Since then there has been continuous progress in the infrastructure development of Gurudwara Garna Sahib. From time to time, it witnessed landmark changes in premises such as inclusion of three storeys building in 1972, construction of divan hall with mosaic flooring in 1980, and large dining hall in 1984 for Guru da langar.

A superb celebration of Guru Hargobind Sahib takes place once in a year during the month of June. It is the anniversary of Guru Sahib and people come here to pay their tribute and participate in the celebration fair organized by the committee. The aura of Gurudwara is awesome during the time of these festivals. The ambiance along with exteriors decorated with superb attractive show pieces and beautiful lighting stuns everyone. Baisakhi festival is also celebrated in this Gurudwara on larger scale.
